“I knew in advance that the whole thing was going to be bloody expensive.” Gustav Klimt to Fritz Waerndorfer

On the occasion of the 150th birthday of Gustav Klimt (1862–1918), the MAK is examining the artist's world-famous designs for the mosaic frieze in the dining room of the Brussels Palais Stoclet, designed by Josef Hoffmann.
The exhibition catalog provides insights into Klimt's working methods and is dedicated to Adolphe and Suzanne Stoclet as key clients of the Wiener Werkstätte. Perspectives that are often still ignored, such as the creation process of the frieze, the material and ideological appropriation of the motifs designed by Klimt from a historical and art historical perspective, and Klimt's reception of Japanese painting in the Stoclet Frieze are examined, as is the restoration and exhibition history of the design drawings.

Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name (March 21st – July 15th, 2012) at the MAK.

With contributions from Rainald Franz, Anette Freytag, Beate Murr, Elisabeth Schmuttermeier, Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, Johannes Wieninger.
